Terra incognito

Oil on canvas and found objects

Rooke Gallery

Johannesburg

2008

´Terra Incognito´ (unknown land) probed the romantic concepts of the invented landscape and its illusive ability to evoke longing and recognition. Here the artist creates paintings of an imagined version of early cartographers' "Terra Incognita": a series of moodily metaphysical landscapes with poetic projected elements. The product is oddly melancholic, maybe even sentimental - as it sketches a vague landscape. Incorporating found objects and using projections, the artist disrupts the physical limits of his canvas so that the true edge in the work lies not in the mountains and skies, but rather in the mindset of the viewer.
