Field guide

Oil on canvas and found objects

Dawid´s Choice Gallery

Johannesburg

2012

In Field guide, the artist acts as land surveyor, who from a distance observes and calculates the different facets of the land.
The paintings are created without any external reference, the landscape only exists because it is painted. It becomes a nostalgic space rather than the memory of a specific place. The land depicted in the paintings remains unmeasurable despite the presence of the tools of the surveyor as found objects in the work. These tools are unreliable, perhaps even deceitful as the intensity of a landscape cannot be measured: nothing can measure the depth and scale of loss.
