Habitat
Oil on canvas and painted glass
Dawid´s Choice Gallery
Johannesburg
2016
In Habitat, each painting has a layer of glass on which a figure or object has been painted in black. The figures don´t rest in the landscape, rather they hover or float above the land like an apparition.
The figures are not a part of the landscape or objective reality: they are imitations that walk the land with an air of sublimity. They are untouchable, perhaps even unreliable as the play with light and shadow creates a ghost like effect much like a hologram. Like these figures, the artist seduces the viewer: playing tricks with what he sees (or think he sees). This is the fine artist at work as con-artist.
